Becoming an Associate

CommitmentAssociates.becoming

We are called to share in the charism, the spirituality and the mission of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament.

As Associates we know we are expected to attend monthly meetings, the annual Associate Retreat Day, and other Community events with the Sisters.

Admission to Candidacy

We wish to share the charism to which we have been called with others, and so, with the Sisters, we take responsibility for inviting other men and women to consider becoming Associates of the Incarnate Word.

Potential candidates: exhibit a desire for a deeper spirituality; actively participate in the life of the Church; and are willing and able to commit themselves fully to the orientation process.

After visiting several meetings, potential candidates are asked to submit a statement of intent to the Associate Core Committee, who then inform the Leadership of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word of the candidates’ interest to enter into the formal period of orientation and discernment.

The initial invitation comes from a Sister or an Associate who invites a potential candidate to “come and see.” That person then agrees to journey with the candidate through the orientation process.

Orientation of Candidates

The orientation process gives candidates the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and experience of Incarnational Spirituality and the charism of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament.

The process consists of monthly meetings for a minimum of one year. During this time, candidates study and discern their call to grow in Incarnational Spirituality.

The candidates are invited to gather in community with the Associates at their regular monthly meetings and special gatherings.

During the orientation process, candidates discern whether or not they are called to association with this Congregation. At the end of the process, they are invited to make a formal request in writing to Congregational Leadership, asking to become an Associate of the Incarnate Word. At this time they may also express their desire for further study, or to withdraw from the group.

Those accepted as Candidates by the Leadership of the Congregation formalize their commitment at a special celebration of commitment, during which they receive a pin or medal bearing the symbol of the Congregation.

Renewal of Commitment

Association with the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament is generally ongoing. Associates may renew their commitment annually; or, after they have been Associates for three years, they may choose to renew their commitment for a period of three years.
